12 new projects funded

January 20, 2023

Research on specific cancers including breast, head and neck, lung, prostate, pancreatic and lymphoma are among the 12 projects that will benefit from $2.7 million in new grants announced by Siteman Cancer Center through its Siteman Investment Program in 2022. Pedal the Cause is proud to be the major contributor of funds for these grants, which seed some of the most promising and innovative ideas in cancer research.

In November 2022, Pedal the Cause announced a total annual donation of $4,543,878 to Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital to fund world-class cancer research. Since 2010, Pedal the Cause has donated $40,807,523, funding 200 adult and pediatric cancer research projects in St. Louis.

“The support from donors, sponsors, riders and volunteers in the Pedal the Cause community has created phenomenal momentum and progress in cancer research and treatment,” said Timothy J. Eberlein, M.D., director of Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.

“These investments provide hope and enhance care for tens of thousands of patients treated at Siteman Cancer Center every year.”

Pedal the Cause specifically funds early-stage cancer research using the venture capital model. Once an initial concept is proven using Pedal the Cause funds, researchers can then apply for larger grants from federal institutions, like the National Institute of Health. On average, research projects supported by Pedal the Cause go on to receive $7 in federal funding for every $1 initially invested.

“Innovative ideas require funding at the most basic level,” said David Drier, executive director of Pedal the Cause. “These grants represent new ideas that are delving deeper than ever before into discoveries and advances that will provide treatments and cures for cancer. The Pedal the Cause community is tremendously proud to support this critical research at these top-tier institutions we are lucky enough to have in our backyard.”

More than 3,000 participants of all ages joined Pedal the Cause in 2022, cycling, spinning, volunteering or through at-home virtual activities. Participants and teams raised funds from March through October. The generous support of sponsors, led by Edward Jones, ensures that 100 percent of donations made to Pedal the Cause directly fund cancer research.

Pedal the Cause 2023 will take place Sept. 23 & 24 in Chesterfield. Registration opens on March 1, 2023.
