Pedal the Cause dollars are responsible for funding another nine research projects, which Siteman Cancer Center announced yesterday. The projects will fund innovative topics targeting cancers of the brain, blood, pancreas and prostate, as well as other potential treatment therapies. Since 2010, Pedal the Cause has funded 101 cancer research projects at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
Pedal-funded researcher Jason Mills, MD, PhD, is in the news with a new study (funded by Pedal the Cause in 2017) that investigates cancer cell behavior. “As scientists, we have focused a good deal of attention on understanding the role of stem cells in the development of cancers, but there hasn’t been a focus on mature cells,” he says. “But it appears when mature cells return back into a rapidly dividing stem cell state, this creates problems that can lead to cancer.”
Samual Achilefu, PhD, was awarded a Pedal-funded grant in 2016 to develop a prototype for a wearable goggle system that enables advanced fluorescence-guided surgery for cancer patients. Dr. Archilefu is being recognized for his innovative approach to integrating engineering, biology and medicine as a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) along with two of his colleagues at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
Sandi was a first-time rider and King of the Mountains in 2017, and is a stage 4 ovarian cancer fighter. She started her own team, SandiStrong, recruited and fundraised hard, and inspired a lot of people along the way! Sandi’s fledgling team raised over $13,000 for cancer research in year one, we can’t wait to see how they bring it in 2018!
