Brain cancer study broadens reach

Joseph Ippolito, MD, PhD, received a 2015 Pedal-funded grant for a study titled “Characterizing the Effects of Sexual Dimorphism on Glioma Metalbolism.”  Although this proposal was designed to look at sex differences in glioma (brain cancer) metabolism, he used these resources to attack other clinical samples simultaneously, including kidney cancer samples. He recently published in the journal Radiology and his research is discussed in this article released this month.

Featured Project

Funded in 2017
Principal Investigators:
Buck Rogers, PhD and Dong Zhou, PhD Goal: Late stage prostate cancer is a highly lethal disease with no curative therapeutic options.  Recently, the FDA approved a radioactive drug that has increased the survival of late stage prostate cancer patients.  This drug is effective even though it is not delivered to the prostate cancer cells themselves, but to normal cells near the prostate cancer.  Drs. Rogers and Zhou have developed a drug similar to this FDA-approved agent, but it is targeted to the prostate cancer cells, which should make it much more effective than the FDA-approved agent and with fewer side effects.
